Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

The “Gentle Art”, learn how to move fluidly on the ground or standing up and develop a set of skills that will both strength your body and keep you safe. Also known as B.J.J., this grappling art focuses on using leverage and technique over power and strength.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is for everyone to learn, whether you want to be a serious competitor, learn more about self-defense, simply pick up a new hobby or get in shape. Located next to Lake Merritt, in the Uptown district of Oakland we are easy to access from Berkeley, San Leandro, Hayward, Castro Valley, and Alameda. Our classes are designed to be both accessible to everyone and challenging to those who want to push their level of conditioning and hone their competitive spirit.

A typical class consists of a brief warmup routine, instruction for 2-3 new techniques, and some light partner drilling to reinforce the new techniques. The second (optional) phase of the class includes full-speed drilling, sparring, and a circuit workout. This second phase of class is optional throughout each section. It is meant for those looking to improve their fitness levels and challenge themselves. This will also be when the competition team prepares for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competitions.

CAMBO is a grappling sport with Russian origins and is included in our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program. CAMBO coaching with Matthew Galindo emphasizes takedowns, throws and leg locks, designed to be applicable in a broad grappling context. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu emphasizes guard passing and tends to favor upper body submissions, while CAMBO emphasizes throws, take downs and lower body submissions. This class is unique in that it closes the gaps between sport styles and is geared toward students with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or wrestling backgrounds who need to broaden their game and have answers to multi-style scenarios. Novices in any grappling art are welcome – this class can serve as an intro to grappling strategy with an emphasis on lower body set ups and submissions and a great intro to take downs and throws.

Training for me now is about growing, learning and sharing that with others, especially other women who might not feel they are welcome in such a traditionally masculine space. Without a doubt, my favorite part of BJJ is teaching. I learn so much from it and I’ve always been a big nerd. Irregardless of your abilities, body type, age, or athletic experience, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is for everyone!.

Shawn Tamaribuchi is the head program instructor for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. She currently holds the rank of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt under black belt and World Champion Lana Stefanac. She has trained in Krav Maga as well as Muay Thai, and fought professional MMA where she had the opportunity to fight in the US, Japan and New Zealand. After her MMA career, she found a deep love and appreciation for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and started to devote the majority of her time to her Jiu-Jitsu training.

Despite having traveled and trained around the world, Shawn loves to call the Bay Area home. She has been teaching group classes for over ten years, working with local youth organizations on self defense and empowerment programs, as well as hosting women’s only open mats and workshop series.. Some of Shawn’s accomplishments include: Pro MMA fighter having fought for Fatal Femmes Fighting in LA, Smackgirl Japan, Princesses of Pain New Zealand, and FCC Oklahoma. But her greatest love for teaching stems from sharing what she has learned and hoping to pass on the love she holds for it.

Matthew Galindo is an accomplished grappler with a deep comprehension of CAMBO, wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. His mission is to close the gaps between the different grappling sports and set his athletes up to respond with a full skill set independent of any one sport form. He is well versed in each sport’s rule set and prescribed strategy, and uses this knowledge to provide innovative responses to common scenarios. Matt presents some of the most profound yet accessible techniques and game plan in the grappling community. His classes are transformative and scaled to meet any skill level, from the complete novice to the accomplished grappler.
